In this tightly-written and meticulously researched essay, author Ken Pealock provides a unique scientific and heretical interpretation based on 60-years of research into religion, mysticism, yoga, magic, and oddball interpretations of the Bible. He brings his background in psychology, business, advertising, and law to bear in presenting evidence for and against the authenticity of biblical teachings. Witty and irreverent at times, he entertains us with stories of false prophets, fake ministers, and those who peddle pseudo-science that goes beyond science and reason. He mentions the ravings of a mail order minister named Mikkel Dahl, who “explained” how to achieve physical immortality here on earth; a former hobo and founder of the Universal Life Church, Kirby Hensley, who claimed we could live forever in the flesh if we gave up sex; and Annalee Skarin, an excommunicated Mormon who taught immortality by translation. All are dead. Going further, he argues that salvation by grace is a fallacy, that the trinity doctrine is absurd, and that sin is a normal human function. Then he explains why the crucifixion of Christ was not on a cross, that the resurrection has been misinterpreted, and is not even an original story. He delves into the Big Bang, space and time, consciousness, and miracles. His entertaining prose will keep you on the edge of your seat or infuriate you with facts and logic. Still, he sets no agenda and leaves our beliefs intact, whether theological or secular.
