Welcome to the Honey B&B: A Heartfelt Journey Through Love and Loss

There are moments in literature when a book isn’t just a collection of words, but a warm embrace that pulls you in, reshapes your perspective, and lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page. That was my experience with Welcome to the Honey B&B by Melody Carlson. With her signature flair for emotion and storytelling, Carlson dives into themes often swept under the rug—specifically, the raw and challenging realities of dementia.

Welcome to the Honey B&B introduces us to Honey, a devoted caregiver grappling with the heartbreaking realities of her husband CT’s frontal temporal dementia. This isn’t just another illness narrative; it’s an exploration of love, loss, and resilience. As I turned each page, I felt the weight of Honey’s grief, juxtaposed with her unwavering commitment to her marriage vows. The way she reminisces about simple joys like their peanut butter sandwiches or CT’s passion for beekeeping is poignant, artfully demonstrating how memories are both treasures and burdens.

The family dynamics are beautifully intricate, especially in the character of Jewell, who moves back to Oregon “to help” her parents, but we quickly realize that she is dodging her own fears about her daughter, Cooper. Teenage angst is embodied perfectly in Cooper, whose transition into this new life feels like navigating a stormy sea. I found myself rooting for her through the rocky adjustment, as she learns to bond with her grandfather’s beloved bees. It’s a classic coming-of-age arc, complete with moody teenage moments, yet ultimately layered with growth that resonated deeply with me. Through Cooper’s journey, Carlson embeds a universal message about adapting to change and finding our place in the world.

One of the standout elements of Carlson’s writing is her ability to interlace humor amid the more serious themes. She presents moments of lightness that offer relief, ensuring that the narrative doesn’t become overwhelmingly heavy. The introduction of Miguel, Honey and CT’s neighbor, adds a delightful spark, bringing a sense of community and connection that underscores the importance of support in trying times.

Another significant aspect to mention is the book’s pacing and narrative style. Carlson effortlessly balances emotional depth with engaging storytelling, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a personal level. By the time I reached the end, tears had fallen freely—not just for the sorrowful moments, but for the triumphs achieved through the struggles of these relatable, deeply human characters. I often find myself forgetting the lives of characters after a read, but the essence of Honey, CT, Jewell, and Cooper stayed with me, evoking both laughter and tears long after I closed the book.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Welcome to the Honey B&B to anyone who appreciates a heartfelt story that intertwines humor and humanity. It is a beautiful exploration of love, grace, and the trials of life that many of us face, wrapped in a comforting narrative that invites readers to reflect on their own blessings. If you’re looking for a book that will resonate, evoke feelings, and possibly require a box of tissues, this is your next read. Thank you to Revell Books and Melody Carlson for providing an ARC of this touching novel. I’m grateful to have shared this journey with Honey and her family; it’s one I won’t soon forget.
