Book Review: Target Acquired (Lake City Heroes, #2) by Jessie Gussman

As a fan of strong heroines and thrilling narratives, I was eager to dive into Target Acquired, the second book in Jessie Gussman’s Lake City Heroes series. After thoroughly enjoying the first installment, I was curious to see how Kenzie King’s journey as a tactical medic on a SWAT team would unfold amidst the chaos of both personal and professional dilemmas. Just the thought of balancing captivating action with character growth had me hooked from the start!

In Target Acquired, we’re introduced to Kenzie King, a fiercely determined character striving to earn her place on an all-male SWAT team, where skepticism looms around her abilities. Couple that with Cole Garrison, a man of faith seeking a deeper connection while trying to navigate the dangerous waters Kenzie inadvertently stirs, and you have the recipe for both tension and romance. The story quickly thickens when team members start getting ambushed, propelling Kenzie and Cole into a race against time to uncover the truth.

One of the standout themes is the struggle for acceptance in a male-dominated field. Kenzie faces not just external threats but also internal battles fueled by self-doubt and the weight of her past. Gussman skillfully portrays this duality, making Kenzie not just a soldier but a woman with layers and vulnerabilities that tug at the heartstrings.

However, I found the integration of flashbacks to a historical setting somewhat jarring. While I appreciate Gussman’s effort to weave together past and present, these segments felt a bit shoehorned in and distracted from the contemporary pacing that was otherwise engaging. That said, her ability to create tension and suspense is commendable. The sheer urgency of the unfolding threats against the team kept me on the edge of my seat.

The dialogue, while often witty and sharp, occasionally fell flat in pacing. While Gussman has a knack for showcasing character relationships, I felt moments of disconnect that pulled me out of the narrative. Still, the camaraderie and banter between characters added a definite charm to the story, making their shared experiences feel relatable.

One quote that struck me came from Kenzie, reflecting on her father’s disapproval: "He taught me that nothing I did was ever good enough." This encapsulates the emotional undercurrents of the novel, reminding readers that healing from past wounds takes resilience and grit, much like Kenzie’s determination on the battlefield.

With a solid 3.5 stars personally, I can confidently say Target Acquired will resonate with fans of romantic suspense and strong female leads. It’s an engaging read for those who enjoy stories that explore themes of personal growth amidst the backdrop of action. While some elements didn’t fully hit the mark for me, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, eager to see how Kenzie’s journey continues to unfold.

So, if you’re in the mood for a gripping story filled with romance, suspense, and a touch of faith, I highly recommend picking up this book! You might just find yourself cheering for Kenzie and a certain hunky medic as they navigate their way through danger and burgeoning love. Happy reading!
