Book Review: Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

How do I even begin to unravel the treasure that is Six of Crows? I knew from the start that Leigh Bardugo had something special brewing in the vibrant city of Ketterdam, but nothing could prepare me for the impact these characters would have on my heart. How can I put into words the sheer depth of my love for this book? And how on earth am I supposed to navigate this beautiful ache in my chest that lingers with every turned page?

But here I am, diving headfirst into this review, hoping my voice holds strong and my words do justice to what I felt.

“The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.” From the very first sentence, I was entranced. I anticipated a thrilling tale of heists, mischief, and camaraderie—something lighthearted and fun. What I received, however, was so much more. Six of Crows intertwines a high-stakes heist with an intricate tapestry of love, loyalty, and the scars of past choices that shape our identities.

The plot centers on Kaz Brekker, the infamous leader of the Dregs. Offered an irresistible job, Kaz assembles a crew of misfits: each with their own heartbreak and hidden strengths. The stakes are high, but it’s not just the thrilling adventure that kept me glued to the page; it was the intimate exploration of life, hate, and the choices that bind us.

Now, let’s talk about the characters—oh, the characters! Kaz, with his sharp wit and vulnerability, is a perfect blend of strength and trauma. He’s a character I found myself rooting for, even as I ached for him. His struggles with anxiety pulled me in, leaving me breathless at moments, as if I were standing right beside him. “Myself and nothing else,” he says, and I could feel the weight of the world resting on his shoulders.

Then there’s Inej, the “Wraith.” Fierce yet fragile, her journey through fear and strength spoke to me deeply. Her bond with Kaz is a bittersweet tension that I couldn’t help but root for, even as my heart clenched at the barriers that kept them apart. The way Bardugo paints their relationship is simply stunning.

Nina and Matthias bring a wonderfully chaotic dynamic to the crew. Their banter had me laughing out loud in a café, eliciting curious glances from strangers. With every back-and-forth, I felt a growing attachment to these characters, their flaws, and their fierce loyalty to one another.

And then there’s Wylan—so innocent, yet so pivotal. His struggles with self-worth captivated my heart, reflecting the broader themes of finding one’s place in a world filled with judgment.

Bardugo’s writing is spellbinding, with pacing that propels you through the pages. The dialogue is sharp and witty, grounding the high fantasy in delicious realism that resonates. “No mourners, no funerals,” becomes a haunting refrain, encapsulating the world’s harshness yet simultaneously celebrating these fractured souls finding camaraderie.

Books Worth Reading:

In the end, Six of Crows is not just a story about a heist; it’s about healing and love, and the lengths we go to protect those we care for. If you enjoy richly woven character-driven narratives with a blend of adventure and heart, this book is for you.

For all of my fellow Dregs, consider this my heartfelt invitation to join Kaz and his crew. You won’t just read their story—you’ll become a part of it.
