Review of An Overdue Match by Author [Insert Author’s Name]
There’s something undeniably enchanting about the role of a librarian, and when I stumbled upon An Overdue Match, I knew I was in for a delightful adventure thanks to its matchmaking librarian, Evangeline Kelly. I was intrigued by the premise of romance intertwined with a library setting, but what I found was a heartfelt story far richer than I could have anticipated!
At the heart of this charming tale is Evangeline, a devoted librarian with an infectious love for romance novels—yet she’s convinced she’s not cut out for her own happily-ever-after. The pivotal moment of her fiancé calling off their wedding due to her alopecia adds a layer of emotional depth that makes her character relatable and raw. Amidst her own heartache, Evangeline finds joy in playing matchmaker for her patrons, fully embracing the role she thinks she’s best suited for. Her journey of self-rediscovery is both poignant and refreshing.
Enter Tai Davis, a tattoo artist whose captivating appearance and magnetic personality bring a whirlwind of change into Evangeline’s life. Right from the start, Tai is drawn to the quirky librarian, and, despite her hesitations, he relentlessly pursues her. Their initial banter is irresistibly playful, reminding me of the magnetic pull often found in romantic comedies. I loved how Tai’s character partly reflects the struggles of preconceived notions—just as he battles judgment based on his looks, so too does Evangeline confront her self-image issues.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the thoughtful exploration of assumptions based on appearances. Both characters are layered, with Tai’s backstory of overcoming asthma, anxiety, and societal judgment adding a richness that resonates deeply. Their budding romance unfolds through a clever arrangement: for every romantic setup Evangeline orchestrates, she goes on a date with Tai. This unique premise allows for genuine moments of connection—something I couldn’t help but root for!
The writing style is both engaging and vivid, capturing the essence of small-town life while making readers feel a part of Evangeline’s world. The pacing felt just right, allowing me to savor the couple’s evolving relationship while drawing me in with its charm. The warm, humorous dialogue, coupled with heartfelt reflections about identity and growth, made this an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.
There are countless standout moments throughout the book, but one that took my breath away was when Evangeline begins to shed her insecurities and reclaim her identity. It’s a testament to the healing power of love and self-acceptance, and it was incredibly moving to see her character arc unfold so beautifully.
An Overdue Match is a delightful blend of sweet, funny, and poignant storytelling. It beautifully showcases how love can bloom unexpectedly and how books—much like life—can provide perspectives that expand our empathy. This piece is a heartfelt reminder that everyone has a story worth understanding, and that behind every cover, lies depth and complexity waiting to be discovered.
For those who enjoy romantic comedies with a touch of introspection, who believe in the magic of libraries, or who have ever played matchmaker (even in the smallest ways), this book is a gentle invitation to explore the heart’s capacity for love and healing. I received a digital copy from Baker Publishing and Bethany House Fiction via NetGalley, and while a positive review was not required, I can confidently say this was an easy five-star read for me. Be prepared to hug it to your chest once you turn the last page!
