Dive into the Magic of Vanya and the Wild Hunt

When I first heard about Vanya and the Wild Hunt by A. R. Capetta, I was intrigued by the premise: an eleven-year-old girl with the ability to converse with books? As an avid reader myself, that concept was too enchanting to resist! After diving in, I can confidently say that Capetta’s venture into middle-grade fiction is nothing short of refreshing, albeit with a cliffhanger that left my heart racing for the next installment!

Vanya, or Lavanya, as her delightful name suggests, lives above her family’s bookshop in Norwich. Being a British Indian with ADHD makes her feel like an outsider—not just at school but in her own skin. This aspect of her identity plays beautifully into her character arc, and I appreciated how Capetta explored Vanya’s struggles with authenticity. The humor interspersed throughout her journey, especially her witty one-liners, resonated with me—they brought a much-needed levity to her vulnerabilities.

The adventure kicks off with a terrifying monster attack on Vanya’s family, revealing her latent magical abilities. This event propels her to Auramere, a magical academy for gifted children. This setting is captivating, brimming with a host of mythical creatures and rich folklore that invites readers to learn and appreciate various cultural narratives. Fans of diverse settings will adore the way Capetta meticulously constructs this world; it feels like a buffet of myths just waiting to be discovered!

However, I want to highlight that the pacing does start slowly for the first 35% of the book. While this begins to establish the plot and characters, it can feel drawn out for eager readers. But once the story gathers momentum, it sweeps you up in a whirlwind of action and excitement. The blend of Capetta’s vivid writing style and the inclusion of beautiful Black-and-white pencil illustrations adds a charming visual touch to the reading experience. I particularly loved the images of Vanya and her hair; it stirred fond memories of my own childhood mane!

Vanya’s dad, with his unique array of nicknames, is a delightful character. His endearing creativity in addressing Vanya can spark laughter and also provokes a silly moment of cultural connection—me translating “little Aardvark” into “adrak” (ginger) in my mind!

The supporting characters are just as engaging, bringing a diverse and inclusive flair that enhances Vanya’s journey. Some stood out more than others, but that’s part of the charm in an ensemble cast in middle-grade fiction; the dynamics keep readers guessing.

As I reached the end of the book, I was left hanging on a cliff that offered just enough excitement to eager for a sequel. Now, I find myself yearning for the next installment and hoping to snag an ARC whenever it becomes available. A gentle heads-up about the cliffhanger would have been appreciated; starting with the right expectations can transform a reading experience!

In conclusion, Vanya and the Wild Hunt is an exhilarating adventure brimming with elaborate world-building and heartwarming humor. I believe this book will resonate with young readers who cherish magic, action, and the journey of self-discovery. It made me reflect on my own whimsical moments of childhood, reminding us that magic often exists within and around us.

So, grab your favorite cozy blanket, and prepare for a journey through Auramere; Vanya’s world awaits you! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Books for this eARC. This review is purely my passion spilling onto the page, meant to share the joy of reading!
